Childcare Solicitor
Connect2Luton are excited to recruit a Childcare Solicitor on behalf of Luton Borough Council.
Purpose of role:
To assist in the provision of a comprehensive legal service to the Council, its Executive, Committees and Sub-Committees, and to Departments.
To provide legal advice and to be responsible for a personal legal caseload in particular in relation to child care and related matters.
Key Responsibilities:
- Give legal advice, to Officers and Members of the Council as required to allow them to make decisions and achieve solutions to problems that comply with the law.
- Represent the Council before Courts and Tribunals as an advocate conducting cases in a way that complies with current practice and protocols and take all reasonable steps to achieve the judgements/decisions, which could reasonably be expected from the available evidence.
- Carry out other legal work as required, including the drafting of any necessary documents (excluding conveyancing and similar property matters) to implement decisions taken in pursuance of the Council's functions.
- Exercise judgement in accordance with broad guidance laid down by the postholder's Line Manager, as to whether specialist legal advice and/or assistance is required and instruct Counsel in such cases as may be approved by the Head of Legal Services or the Principal Solicitor (Social Services) to enable decisions to be taken and implemented in accordance with the law.
- Participate in projects and assist in such corporate, interdivisional or interdepartmental work as may be required by the Principal Solicitor (Social Services) or the Head of Legal Services to enable the Council to formulate and implement policies in accordance with the law.
- Limited supervision of Junior staff in order to meet the objectives of the department and provide an effective service delivery for the benefit of all service users.
About You:
- Local Government Experience
- Able to demonstrate ability to plan/ prioritize own caseload within broad guidelines and subject to supervision
- Decisive - ability to make decisions - render judgment within guidelines set by management
- Oral and written communication skills - able to elicit relevant information in moderately complex situations and translate it into effective documents
- Knowledge and understanding of qualities issues and legislation
- Demonstrable knowledge of English Law
- Knowledge of Childcare Law
- Agile working to suit business needs. Courts are usually in the Borough, occasionally surrounding area
- A minimum of 4 years PQE is essential
