Connect2Luton's Review on the Evolving Care Sector
The social care sector continues to evolve rapidly, shaped by new policies, shifting budgets, and changing workforce dynamics. Over the past year, professionals across the sector have witnessed significant developments that are influencing recruitment, retention, and day-to-day practice. In this blog, one of our talented team member has shared their perspectives on key trends, challenges, and opportunities shaping the social care market today. Whether you’re currently seeking your next role or looking to understand the broader landscape, these insights offer valuable guidance for navigating this dynamic environment.
What changes have you observed in the social care market over the past year?
Sidony:
Over the last year, I’ve noticed a real increase in both permanent vacancies and the number of newly qualified social workers entering the job market. Despite this, many newly qualified workers are struggling to find roles after completing their studies. It’s so important that we create clear pathways for newly qualified social workers to help them transition into practice and ensure we’re investing in the future of the profession by supporting the next generation of practitioners.
In what ways have changes to local authority budgets affected recruitment in the past year?
Sidony:
I’ve definitely noticed a decrease in the number of available roles, and more social workers are now considering permanent positions. It’s great to see local authorities successfully bringing strong practitioners into their permanent workforce. That said, there will always be a need for locums to provide essential support, so it’s important that social workers understand how the market is shifting and what that means for their options.
What advice would you offer to practitioners currently looking for their next role in social care?
Sidony:
My tip would be communication. It’s so important to have trust and confidence in your talent partner. You want someone who brings real expertise and is genuinely focused on supporting your career—not just placing you in a role, but helping you grow and succeed in the long term.
Looking ahead, what do you believe will be the most significant change in the social care sector over the next year?
Sidony:
I think the obvious one is the implementation date for all assignments across children’s agency roles. This is going to have a real impact on who can take on assignments, so having an experienced talent partner to guide you through it will be key. It’s more important than ever to stay informed about these developments and understand how they might affect your options.
Sadly, there might be a push for permanent jobs and recruitment, meaning fewer jobs for agencies
